Even though Windows 8 apps usually fill your entire computer screen, there may be a time when you need to view another app at the same time. For example, you may want to open the Maps app while still keeping your Mail app open to read an address in an email. Here’s a way to view a second app on the screen at the same time.
Snap an open app
To view a second app on screen at the same time as an already open app, you must first pin or ‘snap’ the open app to one side of your screen.
Step 1 Move the mouse cursor to the top edge of the app, where it will change into a hand icon
Step 2 Click and drag downwards. The app will shrink down in size.
Step 3 Drag the app to either the left or right hand side of your screen and then release the mouse button.
Step 4 The app will snap to the side of the screen in a narrow window.
Step 5 Click anywhere in the empty part of the screen to return to the Start screen.
Step 6 Click on another app to open it.
Step 7 Both apps will appear side by side.
While you can’t resize the amount of screen space given to each app, you can click and drag the app divider to switch between which of the two apps fills the main part of the screen.
Snap a background app
You can snap an app that is already open and running in the background. Here’s how:
Step 1 Move your mouse cursor to the top left corner of the screen to show the App switcher with the list of running apps.
Step 2 Right-click the app you want to snap and choose either Snap Left or Snap Right.
