The first user account that you create on your Windows 8 PC is an Administrator account. This gives you full control of your computer so you can install or delete programs and make system-wide changes. However, not everyone who uses the computer needs – or should have – this level of control.
This is where Standard user accounts prove useful. A Standard account limits what a user can do with the computer. When they log in with their Standard user account, Windows knows which folders, files and programs they can use, what their screen should look like, and what system changes they can make. If a Standard user tries to make a change that isn’t allowed, they’ll be asked for the Administrator password.
Create a new user account
Step 1 Log in to your Windows PC as the Administrator
Step 2 Move your mouse cursor to the top right of the screen and, from the Charms menu, click Settings
Step 3 Click Change PC Settings at the bottom right of the screen. The PC Settings app will open full screen
Step 4 Click Users in the left-hand pane, and then click Add a user
Step 5 Now select an account type:
– a local account to use on just this PC
– a Microsoft account, which can be used on other Windows 8 computers and devices giving access to your SkyDrive files as well as personal settings such as your customised screen setup
In this example, we’ll show how to set up a local account but setting up a Microsoft account is just as easy. And if you change your mind after creating a local account, you can easily switch it to a Microsoft account at a later stage.
Step 6 Click Sign in without a Microsoft account
Step 7 Click Local account
Step 8 Type a name in the User name box
Step 9 Type a password into the Password box, and then type it again in the Reenter password box to confirm
Step 10 Enter a password hint in the Password hint box. This is a word or phrase to help the user remember their password.
Step 11 Click Next. The account is created
Step 12 If the account is for a child, tick Is this a child’s account? check box. This will help later if you choose to set up parental controls on this account.
Step 13 Click Finish
