Protect your computer from all sorts of online nasties by ensuring Microsoft’s anti-virus and anti-malware tool is turned on.
Windows 8 has a built-in anti-virus and anti-spyware program called Windows Defender. Running in the background, it regularly scans your system for viruses and malicious software, alerting you should you need to take action. You can also use Windows Defender to perform a scan of your computer at any time.
Turn on Windows Defender
Step 1 Move your mouse cursor to the upper-right corner of the screen and, from the Charms menu, click Search, then type defender into the search box.
Step 2 From the search results, click Windows Defender.
Step 3 Click Turn On.
Step 4 Click the Settings tab and then tick the check box next to Turn on real-time protection (recommended), then click Save changes.
Step 5 Click the Scan now button to perform a scan of your computer. Choose either a quick or full scan – or the custom option to scan just selected files.
