Recover a lost Windows 7 user password

If you’ve lost or forgotten your Windows 7 user account password it can be really frustrating but there are ways to reset your login password.

Reset the password for a standard user account

If you’ve lost the password to a Windows 7 standard user account, log onto your computer using the Windows 7 adminstrator account then reset the password for the standard user account.

Step 1  Click Start, then click Control Panel. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts and Family Safety, then click User accounts. Enter the administrator password if requested.

Step 2  Click Manage another account.

Step 3  Click the user account name with the lost password.

Step 4  In the next screen, click Change the password.

Step 5  Type in the new password, confirm the new password, then click OK.

Reset the administrator account password

Forgetting the password for your administrator account can be more problematic. However, if you’ve previously created a password-reset disc. you can use this. Here’s how:

Step 1  Click OK to close the message where you’ve entered the wrong password

Step 2  Click Reset password, then plug in the USB flash drive that’s your password reset disk, or insert your password reset disc into your PC’s optical drive.

Step 3  Follow the onscreen instructions to reset the password to a new password.

Step 4  Log on with your new password. If you lose this password, you can use the same password reset disk as previously – you don’t need to make a new one.
