Solve internet connection problems

Not getting an internet connection on your PC can be really frustrating, particularly as you can’t access online help to solve the problem. Try these steps to fix the most likely causes.

Step 1  Check that all cables are securely plugged into each devices. To make sure, unplug and then plug them back in.

Step 2  Restart all the devices. Turn off the modem and router, then turn off your computer and unplug them from the mains – check that all the lights on the front of the devices go out. Wait 30 seconds, then plug the modem back in and restart it. Then plug in the router and restart it, and finally plug in the computer and restart it.

If this doesn’t solve the problem, run Windows’ Network troubleshooter. This will help to identify and fix the problem.

Step 1  Click the Start button, type troubleshooting into the search box. Click Troubleshooting from the list of results, and choose Network and Internet.


Step 2  Click Internet Connections.

Step 3  Windows’ Network troubleshooter will run to figure out and fix the problem.
