View and sort files in Windows 8 File Explorer

On Windows 8 Desktop, File Explorer (previously known as Windows Explorer) lets you see all the content stored on your computer, network or connected drives. Here you can open, copy, rename, rearrange or delete files and folders. 

There are several ways to view your files, folders and subfolders in File Explorer. For example, you can choose to view your files as a list and your pictures as small icons. Here’s how:

Step 1  Open the folder or library you want to view the content of

Step 2  Click the View tab on the Ribbon

Step 3 Choose an option from the Layout group. Options are:

  • Extra Large icons
  • Large icons
  • Medium icons
  • Small icons
  • List
  • Details
  • Tiles
  • Content

Sort files

Using File Explorer’s View tab, you can sort and view your files by size, name, date created, date modified, file type, and much more.

Step 1  Open the folder or library you want to view the content of

Step 2  Click the View tab on the Ribbon

Step 3  Click the down arrow on the Sort button
