Make your laptop battery last longer

Ten power-saving tips to make your laptop battery last longer.

Here are our top ten essential tips for keeping your laptop battery in tip-top condition so it has enough juice to complete the tasks you need while on the move.

TIP 1  Don’t leave your laptop in extreme temperatures either outside in cold weather or in a hot car. Hot batteries quickly discharge, while cold batteries can’t create much power.

TIP 2  Do one thing at a time – don’t have lots of programs open and running at the same time as this will quickly drain battery life.

TIP 3  To preserve battery life while using your laptop away from a power source, be careful what you use it for. Activities such as email and word processing use much less power than playing a game or watching a movie either on DVD or streamed across the internet.

TIP 4  Plugging in external devices, such as a USB mouse, will drain your laptop battery faster, so to preserve power remove them down when not in use.

TIP 5  Turn off wi-fi unless you are connected. Wi-fi drains the battery by constantly drawing power to look for networks.  Many laptops have a function button that enables you to turn off the wireless adaptor manually.

TIP 6  Eject CDs or DVDs when not in use. Having a disc spinning in your disc drive waste power so eject it before you use your laptop on battery power.

TIP 7  Make sure you fully charge the battery whenever you have access to mains power.

TIP 8  Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the contacts on your laptop battery. This helps make the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.

TIP 9  Keeping your laptop constantly plugged into the mains will reduce the life cycle of the battery. Consider removing the battery – first charge it to 40% – and then store it in a dry, warm place.

TIP 10  One of the most power-hungry parts of the laptop is the screen. You can save tons of battery power by turning the screen’s brightness down. You can usually find the screen brightness option on one of the F keys (it looks like a little sun symbol with up and down icons). To use it, just hold down the correct function key and then choose up or down.
